The Lost Sheep

by Deean G. Strecker

Like a roaming sheep, I became lost
when I sought to find my way.
Not knowing the dangers before me,
I wandered and went astray.

I thought that I could go it alone
without my Shepherd's care.
So, I left His flock to venture out,
not knowing of Satan's snares.

I found myself in deep, dark woods,
uncertain of which way to go.
There were many paths before me.
Which was right? I didn't know.

Suddenly, in the trees around,
as far as I could see,
evil spirits, with glowing eyes,
were staring back at me.

The fear I felt at that moment
was like nothing I felt before.
Realizing I had made a mistake
was something I couldn't ignore.

I felt my body tremble
and I tried to leave in haste.
I fell many times along the way,
as I ran from that horrible place.

Traveling for many a day and night,
hungry, cold, and alone,
Each time I closed my eyes to sleep,
my dreams would carry me home.

I fell to many temptations and trials
on this journey I chose to take.
I longed to return to my Shepherd's flock,
but feared it was too late.

My eyes grew weak from tears I shed.
From my sins, I couldn't hide.
I had betrayed my loving Shepherd.
My heart became heavy inside.

With one last hope I called His name.
"Oh Jesus where can You be!
I've lost my way and can't come home.
Please Lord, come rescue me."

Just then I heard a familiar voice.
I turned around to see
My Good Shepherd was standing there,
with His arms reached out to me.

I ran to Him as fast as I could
and He held me in His embrace.
His eyes were full of so much love
as He wiped the tears from my face.

"I've wronged you Lord, in many ways.
My sins are far from few.
Please forgive the evils I have done,
and the pain I've put You through."

"There's joy in heaven when a child repents.
Your sins are forgiven thee.
Take my hand, and I will lead you, child.
Your faith has set you free.

I asked, "Dear Lord, how is it
that You came to rescue me?
What of all the others
who have put their faith in Thee?"

"Fear not, My child, for they are safe,
when they follow what I have told.
My Spirit dwells within each of them
that are members of My fold.
