Learning To Lean

by Deean G. Strecker

I heard a song called "Learning to Lean,"
but never really understood.
For years I depended only on myself.
Lean on the Lord? I never would.

Oh, I'd pray and ask for His guidance,
but never left my burdens at His cross.
Instead, I'd turn and pick them up again,
never realizing the blessings I just lost.

Sometimes He has to take all your crutches away.
So instead of walking tall, you fall short.
All the things you used to rely on
are stripped away, leaving no support.

Then you find yourself calling once more,
"Lord, help me," while down on your knees.
When your prayers seem not to be answered,
you're doubtful and your soul's not at ease.

"God helps those who help themselves,"
you think, this may be the answer!
Instead of waiting, you try to force His hand,
but to Him this is called spiritual cancer.

When you near your end, feeling there's no hope,
and it feels you're on a high wire.
When you're standing there naked and all alone
is when He comes, lifting your spirits higher.

"Lean on Me," He whispers, "and not on the world,
for the world will soon pass away.
Throw all your manmade securities down.
Lean on Me, and you'll never sway."

It's strange how God picks the right moment,
a time when He and not us will shine.
He may not come when we want Him too,
but He'll always be right on time.
