A Candle Lit With Love

by Deean G. Strecker

The night was cold, as a fierce wind blew.
Darkness was all I could see.
I was lost in the woods, without any hope
of someone to rescue me.

Huddled beneath a tree for warmth,
I hungered for food, but had none.
Knowing I'd perish this very night
unless, hopefully, help would come.

"Lord," I prayed, "please rescue me,
for I'll surely not last this night through.
The snow grows deep, securing my grave.
Is this the night I'll join You?"

A flicker of light, I then saw through the trees.
Blinking twice, I had to be sure.
Could my eyes play tricks because of my need,
or was this the death I must endure?

Making my way through snow drifts,
my clothes became soaked and ripped.
My determination grew to follow the light
in spite of the times I slipped.

A candle sat burning in a window sill,
where hands had placed it with care.
Who had provided this light to guide
and lead me safely there?

After knocking, a stranger opened the door.
With a smile, I was welcomed inside.
I thanked her for the candle that lit the way,
for without it, I would have died.

Lovingly, she met each of my needs;
warm cloths, some food, and a fire.
Her act of giving was without doubt
a memory I'd always admire.

You are the one that lit that candle.
On the sill of your heart it was placed.
When trials and troubles came my way,
your love was the light I embraced.

Many times I may stumble and lose my way,
but I know your light's always there.
The glow from your heart brings me safety,
from the candle of love that you bear.

For thou wilt light my candle:
The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
Psalms 18:28
